Classic
Urban Harmony's "Under the Streetlamp:
Tales From the Doo Wop Era: Part 2"
at the Garwoood
(NJ) Public Library, May 11, 2011
On Wednesday
evening May
11, 2011, we were back at one of our favorite venues, the Garwood (NJ) Public
Library to give our newly updated "Under the Streetlamp: Tales from the Doo
Wop Era - Part 3. As usual we had a great reception from an enthusiastic
crowd. For the first time, our Doo Wop Part 3 presentation included an unraveling
of the confusing tale of the Del
Vikings, who, as "Come Go With Me" and "Whispering Bells" hit the charts,
had two competing groups performing, both legitimate! We covered the
relationship of our music with fast cars, from "The Cadillac Boogie" and "Rocket
88" to "Buick 59" and "59 Volvo". We talked about how opportunity
knocked twice for the Philly group, the Sensations. We told
how Gene Chandler became "The Duke of Earl" and and how Virgil Johnson &
the Velvets came to record "Tonight Could Be The Night".
We also related the stories of the Mellokings, the original Blue Notes
and more. We played music and video clips and gave out CD's to those
in the audience who first identified the mystery doo wop artist and the
piano intro that was used twice in popular records. As usual,
Pam presided over a memorabilia display that this time included our
memorabilia book of Mills Brothers items as well as other treasures.
Guest celebrities in the audience included
Frank Cicerale, lead of the acappella group Re-memberThen and Tommie Shider,
lead of the acappella group, The Sheps. Also in attendance were WRDV-FM
radio personality Night Train Jim Bakay and noted group harmony enthusiasts
Angelo Pompeo and Carl Tancredi.
From the depth of the discussions during the
Q&A it was again obvious that our Garwood audience is one of the most
knowledgeable around. Our thanks to all of you who came out to this
presentation. We've been invited back on Wednesady, October 12.
Mark your calendars. - C&P
