For those of
you who were fortunate enough to have joined us on April 21, 2010, at the
Franklin Township Public Library you got to see our newest and one of our
best presentations. We had a packed venue with many singers in the
audience including Tommy Bialoglow, original founding member of the Duprees; Bobby
Thomas of the Vibranaires, Vibes, V-8’s and Orioles; Vic Donna of Vic Donna & the
Parakeets; Shelly Buchansky an original founding member of Vito & the Salutations
and later of the Five Discs, Silk City and Kid Kyle's Kool Kats; Ron
Taylor of the Del Larks; Ray Block of Vintage and later the Bonaires and the Ad-Libs; Carl
Anderson of the Plurals; and Jim Bakay of Street Corner Five. Everyone
attending received a printed souvenir program listing all the doo wop group
of New Jersey that we could document. Many in the audience had their
programs autographed by the singers. As usual, Pam managed our display
table with five display books of doo wop sheet music and group photos.
This time we also added an additional display book containing 50 photos of
doo wop vocal groups from New Jersey! Radio personalities Lou Rallo (WRSU), Jim Bakay
(WRDV) and
Carl Tancredi (Gold Radio) were also in attendance. Our friend Angelo Pompeo
brought in ten CD’s he composed of rare New Jersey vocal group recordings and we gave them out as door prizes
along with three CD’s of the Del Larks greatest hits that Ron Taylor supplied. Everyone
raved about the presentation as we told the stories of the Coleman Brothers,
Rivals, Vibranaires, V-8’s, Rivieras, Plurals, Del Larks, Ronnie & the Hi-Lites,
Monotones, Four Lovers, Du Barrys, Duprees and more. We played an
unreleased demo by the Parisians (before they became the Duprees). We
also raised the intriguing questions of whether or not Gene Mumford was on
the Rivals' Apollo label record and whether or not any copies exist of the
Five Bob-O-Links record on the OKeh label. Our congratulations to Steve
Applebaum for correctly identifying the mystery New Jersey vocal group
record.
For all those who requested we
do a New Jersey Group Presentation Part 2, it's definitely under
consideration. We're also looking for venues to give Part 1 over again
for those who missed it. Our sincere thanks to Angelo Pompeo for
inspiring and assisting with the compilation of New Jersey groups and assembling the New
Jersey Groups CD. Thanks to Paul Kaminski for the artwork on the CD.
Lastly thanks to all who attended for your enthusiasm and feedback.
