Philadelphia Group Harmony Association's
Heavenly Harmony XII Concert
October 3, 2009, Philadelphia

by Pamela Horner

Mr. Lee, President of Philadelphia Group Harmony Assocaition (PGHA), had a stellar line-up on his show, "Heavenly Harmony XII," which was held on October 3, 2009 at the Theater of Living Arts (TLA) on South Street in Philadelphia.   Mr. Lee, dressed in a black tux, was a fabulous host for his PGHA show.  He also had Sandi I. as a charming co-host.  The backing band was the amazing Hal Keshner Band with Hal on keyboards, two saxophones, one guitar and drums.

The evening started with The Encounters.  The group wore black outfits with gold embroidery.  Taking the place of the ailing Pete Milazzo, Joel Katz, was superb.  The Encounters always get my heart beating.  They vocalized “I Wonder Why,” “I Laughed” (Jesters) and “Pretty Little Girl” (Timetones).

The Encounters

Joe Cleary and the Balladeers sing acappella with very tight harmony.  Philadelphian Frankie Lafaro is the newest member of the group.  The Balladeers sang “This Could Be The Night” (Velours), “I’ll Never Tell” (Harptones), and “Don’t Say Goodbye” (with John Paloney lead).  Frankie Lafaro led on his song, “What Do I Have To Do”.

The Balladeers

Joel Katz’ energetic new group The Dynamics gave a powerful presentation of “ I Don’t Want to Cry” (Chuck Jackson), “Pretty Little Angel” (Crests), and “Chapel of Dreams” (Dubs).  A special song “Beside You” (Crests) was sent out to Mr. Lee.  Right before intermission they sang “The Diary” (Little Anthony) and “ I Believe” (Earls).

After intermission, The Encounters took the stage once more, this time singing acappella.  Joel Katz and Warren Tesaro alternated in place of Pete Milazzo.  Their first song was dedicated to Ronnie I, “Now That You’re Gone.”  They closed with their fabulous rendition of “Zu Zu.”

Joe Cariati and The Delmonicos, celebrating their 50th anniversary, sounded just like the first time I heard them at UGHA. They vocalized “Tonight Could Be The Night,” “Heaven On Earth,” and “Millionaire Hobo.”  They took us back to their roots with songs like “There They Go,” “You Can Call” and “The World’s Biggest Fool.”  Loved their songs from the early 1960’s!  Joe C. and group still can hit all the notes!

The last group was Little Isidore and The Inquisitors.  They had Angel Rissoff (Little Leopold) joining them.  Little Isidore is an appealing performer.  He still has his outrageous stories about the group.  The group sang all the songs one would expect of them such as “Oceans Apart,” “Give It Up,” and “Doot Dootse Wah.”  When Angel came on stage he sang “Harlem Hit Parade,” “Jitterbop,” and “Bongo Stomp” for the Philly audience.

All the groups joined Little Isidore and the Inquisitors on “Woo Woo Train” to close the show.  It was a great concert.
