First Annual Philly Doo Wop Festival, Philadelphia, PA (September 16, 2006)

by Pamela Horner

After several days of rain, the sun finally made an appearance at the First Annual Philly Doo Wop Festival.  The celebration took place outdoors at Penn’s Landing on September 16, 2006.  Fourteen doo wop acts (twelve groups sang acappella) turned out to raise funds for the Philadelphia Veterans’ Mutli-Service & Education Center.  Performing were:  Memory Lane, the Emeralds, Street Corner Five, the Heaven Bound Singers, the Informers, Frankie LaFaro, 45 RPM, Now And Then, 5/3 Woodland, the Balladiers, Classic Harmony, Cornerstone, the Eternals, and the Orlons.

Many of Philly’s past and present radio personalities participated, including Charlie Horner and Jerry Blavat who were given lifetime achievement awards.  Numerous Philadelphia harmony singers were in the audience, including James Brown Robinson of the Guytones, Billy Taylor of the Castelles, Larry Pinder of (Philadelphia’s) Students, and Ronnie Springbett of Lydels.  XM Radio’s Cool Bobby B, a Philly native, made the trip from Washington DC.  Over a thousand people attended what is hoped will become a yearly event.
