New Years Eve 2008 with Nicky Addeo and The Nite Owls

By Pamela Horner

New Years’ Eve 2008 was special for us.  Charlie and I welcomed in the New Year in the ocean-side Borough of Allenhurst, New Jersey.  Mister C’s Beach Bistro provided the perfect combination of a lively crowd, great food, a panoramic view of wind-driven waves crashing ashore and some fabulous music.

We chose Mister C’s for our New Years Eve dinner primarily because we wanted to see Nicky Addeo and The Nite Owls Band.  Nicky Addeo is a name well known to vocal group enthusiasts.  From nearby Asbury Park, his career began in the early 1960’s, eventually recording with The Darchaes, The Plazas, The Uniques and The Nite Owls.  He’s still performing now, with and without The Nite Owls.

Mister C’s Beach Bistro has a stunning view of the ocean.  The food and ambience were surprisingly excellent for such a large gathering.  Nicky Addeo has an operatic range and a soaring falsetto.  We had previously seen him and the Nite Owls at UGHA and Nicky’s voice and range remain as powerful as ever.  The Nite Owls consisted of four members who both sang and played instruments.  According to “Mr. Popeye” Ken Pentifallo, the group had not sung together for quite a while; they were however exceptional.

Everyone was invited onto the dance floor.  We had an enjoyable time dancing.  We especially liked to swing dance to Little Richard and Fats Domino’s tunes.  Vocal group harmony sides they sang of note included The Skyliners’ “Since I Don’t Have You”.  On this tune Mr. Popeye added a talking base while playing the drums. The Heartbeats’ “Crazy for You” and “After New Years Eve” were superb slow dances.  Nicky Addeo and The Nite Owls even grooved to soul tunes by The Delfonics “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time” and The Stylistics “You Make Me Feel Brand New”.  These were exceptional examples of excellent falsetto leads by Nicky Addeo. Another song the group has a great arrangement of is “Stardust”.

Please check out Nicky Addeo’s web site on our LINKS page for information on where you can see him perform.  I know Charlie and I would love to see Nicky Addeo and The Nite Owls again.  And when in the area, check out Mister C's Beach Bistro for a great restaurant.  Their website is on our LINKS page.
