On Wednesday
evening, July 21, 2010, a capacity crowd packed the Franklin Township Public
Library’s community room in Somerset, NJ, to hear the acappella group Silk
City. The concert was part of the library’s Summer Concert Series and was
also officially endorsed by Classic Urban Harmony. We thank Erin Blatt, the
library’s Programming/Outreach Librarian
for her enthusiastic support of our music and for having vocal groups perform.
This is the third acappella we brought to the Franklin Township Library. We
at Classic Urban Harmony take no commission for booking groups. It’s pleasure
enough just to help groups find jobs. We do get to sit in the front row,
though! Our goal is to keep vocal group harmony alive and vital for many,
many years.
Silk City is
a vocal quintet who has been singing for many years. The group is comprised
of experienced singers, some of whom also sing with other vocal groups. They
are a very polished group of performers who have a full harmony sound.
They’re also an exceedingly entertaining group who not only sing well but are
also quick with a funny quip. Silk City adjusts their repertoire, singing for
either collector-oriented audiences or for the casual doo wop fan. Silk
City’s members are Jon Rich on lead; Les Levine (bass); Shelly Buchansky (2nd
tenor); Wayne Santiago (baritone); and Warren Tesoro (top tenor).
Incidentally, Shelly was an original founding member of Vito & the
Salutations.
Silk City
opened their performance with The Teenagers’ classic “I Want You To Be My
Girl”. They harmonized to “Sunday Kind of Love”, “Little Girl of Mine”, and
The Students’ “So Young”. The audience was very enthusiastic! I especially
loved their medley of The Passions’ “This is My Love” led by Jon and The
Continentals’ “Dear Lord” led by Warren. The group came back after a short
break to sing, “Share”, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”, “Daddy’s Home” and many
more songs.
Warren was
happy to see many UGHA members in the audience. Jon paid us a big compliment
at the end of the concert, saying that our Classic Urban Harmony web site
keeps the music alive in a very powerful way. Thank you Jon. We hope to keep
on supporting and helping groups for a long, long time.
